Not illustrated. 1900 Excerpt: ...A. O. Hunt: Mr. President, as we are waiting for the report of the Executive Committee, I would suggest that, as we have present with us Dr. J. S. Marshall, Chairman of the Dental Examining Board of the Army, it would be very nice for us to hear something from him in regard to the work of this Board. Dr. Marshall: I do not know just what you would like me to say to you. I have a little paper to read before the general Association, and I do not want to give it away, and for that reason I would prefer that you question me as to what information you would like and then I will tell you what I know. A Member: How do you like it? Dr. Marshall: I have been in Washington with the medical men of the army, and I have this to say: That I never was more kindly received in my life anywhere than I have been received in Washington by the medical men of the army. I have not been made to feel that I occupied an inferior position to any of them, but have been treated as their equal in every way. Therefore I feel that, so far as the dental profession is concerned, our position in the army is just as good as that of the medical men. A Member: What class of men are taking the examinations? Dr. Marshall: In the earlier part of our examinations we found that the men who came before our board were rather poorly qualified. The truth of the matter was that a great many of the men who had received backiug from their Senators and Congressmen felt that all they had to do was to present their credentials--their invitation from the Surgeon-General to appear before our board, --that that was all there was to it, and that they would get through. The result was that they found themselves up against a stone wall, and they were very much surprised to find that they had to pass any examination...
